85% of autism unemployment rate
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. Although individuals with autism can display various types of symptoms on the spectrum, each of them could have unique characteristics and skills to contribute at work.
Yet, due to their communication challenges and the sensory overload issues, the hiring process and the work environment can be unfriendly for them to secure their job. According to CDC, there are an estimated 5.4 million adults with ASD in the United States, about 85% of adults on the autism spectrum are unemployed. It is clear that the autism unemployment issue is problematic.
Employer's lack of knowledge and skills
Despite there being various challenges for individuals with autism, for those employers without prior knowledge of autism, they were more likely to focus on autistic people’s potential negative behaviors rather than personal abilities. Furthermore, those employers could not recognize the importance of job support for people on the spectrum.
Therefore, the key to successful autism employment lies in the employers’ understanding of the disorder and their knowledge and skills to support autistic people with workplace accommodation.
