Override: The Game of Collaboration and Transportation

Override is a two-player online synchronous game that helps adolescents practice empathy, perspective-taking, and other social emotional skills.

A Subway System Naturally Collaborative

Loosely based on the New York subway system, Override is a two-player online synchronous game designed for tablets. The two players, in two different physical locations, anonymously collaborate to get a train from the beginning to the end of the line as they progress through increasingly challenging levels, each requiring more communication, collaboration, and perspective-taking than the last.

Message Sending — the Core Mechanic

The message sending system in the game allows players to alert one another to what they see on their screen that they feel the other player should know about. The nonverbal messages require nonverbal emotional reactions, allowing players to share how they feel throughout the game. The emotional reactions evoke empathy in the players, causing them to think more critically about how their messages come across.
