AccessAble
Persona-based online solution with apps, course, and assessments to improve digital accessibility in higher education by supporting content creators
NYU, like most other institutions, is required to offer accommodations to students with a disability under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Content creators, such as instructional designers, have responsibility to create and provide accessible content . However, they encounter challenges that prevent them from prioritizing accessibility.
Lack of Interaction with Students with Disabilities
Heavy Workload
Inefficient Work Process
AccessAble includes Personas of students with disabilities so that content creators can connect with the students and identify with their goals, aspirations and challenges. Content creators can understand how students access digital content and how design decisions made by them affect their students.
AccessAble contains web applications that mimic disabilities for each persona. Web applications for desktop browsers and mobile devices can help content creators experience how the learners perceive and interact with the environments. In turn, they will be able to more deeply empathize with learners with various impairments and intrinsically motivated to consider their students' needs.
AccessAble has online courses based on adult learning theory. These courses consist of an overview section for brief introduction and an in depth section for a detailed knowledge for specific audience. Both cater to self paced, practical online learning with checklists and templates for user reference.
Both versions were designed with specific disabilities in mind specifically related to the personas. Further, the content is ‘Chunked’ or grouped to allow efficient use of short-term memory.
